Review conducted by both Deputy Chief Ministers and the Transport Minister at the State Road Safety Council meeting
61,000 challans issued and fitness checks conducted on over 31,000 vehicles
The government has placed special emphasis on technology-based monitoring, improved driver training, scientific vehicle fitness checks, and effective adherence to traffic rules to reduce road accidents in Chhattisgarh.
At a meeting of the State Road Safety Council held at the Mantralaya in Nava Raipur, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Arun Sao, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Vijay Sharma, and Transport Minister Shri Kedar Kashyap reviewed various aspects of road safety and instructed officials to ensure effective implementation. Senior officials from various departments, along with MLA Shri Anuj Sharma, were present at the meeting.
It was informed during the meeting that modern vehicle fitness centers, e-driving test tracks, ANPR cameras, and speed monitoring systems are being expanded to strengthen road safety in the state. Between January and May 2026, fitness checks were conducted on 31,604 vehicles, while over 61,000 challans were issued through the technical monitoring system.
Deputy Chief Minister Shri Arun Sao stated that road safety is not the responsibility of a single department but a collective accountability of society. Coordinated efforts involving road engineering, effective enforcement, and public awareness are essential to reduce accidents. He emphasized the need for regular reviews of accident-prone sites to ensure necessary corrective measures and stressed making awareness campaigns more effective.
Deputy Chief Minister Shri Vijay Sharma remarked that preventing loss of life due to road accidents is among the government’s top priorities. He noted that the use of modern technology could make adherence to traffic rules more effective. He directed officials to ensure better coordination among enforcement agencies and prompt action against rule violations. He also placed special emphasis on raising awareness about traffic rules among the youth and students.
Transport Minister Shri Kedar Kashyap stated that technology, training, public awareness, and the effective enforcement system would be further strengthened to reduce road accidents. He stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the state government is continuously working to develop a safe traffic system and transform road safety into a campaign driven by public participation. He instructed officials to ensure the regular review and effective implementation of road safety programs.
It was reported during the meeting that fitness inspections were conducted on 31,604 vehicles between January and May 2026 at modern fitness centers operating in various districts, including Raipur, Bilaspur, Ambikapur, Jagdalpur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Korba, Janjgir-Champa, and Raigarh.
E-driving test tracks are being operated in several districts to promote safe and efficient driving, while the process of constructing such tracks in eight additional districts is underway for the 2026-27 financial year. Regional driving training centers are operational in Bilaspur and Jagdalpur, alongside driving training centers in 14 districts.
To ensure effective compliance with traffic rules across the state, 174 ANPR cameras and seven LiDAR-based speed cameras have been installed. Through these systems, over 61,000 challans were issued between January and May 2026. Additionally, speed governors have been installed in 268,316 vehicles to date to ensure road safety.
Modern training is being provided to drivers at the IDTR (Institute of Driving and Traffic Research) in Naya Raipur. Training was imparted to 15,779 drivers in 2025 and to 4,064 drivers up to April 2026.
Compounding fees amounting to ₹62.21 crore were collected from 2.86 lakh vehicles for traffic rule violations between January and April 2026. In cases of serious violations, 7,434 driving licenses were suspended or cancelled during the 2025-26 period.
